Small Bites Spotlight: Katherine Wates, Kindergarten Teacher at Grantswood Community

Katherine Wates has been teaching for 10 years at Grantswood Community in Irondale, AL and has a palpable passion for hands-on, thematic learning that connects the classroom to real life.

After returning from maternity leave this Fall, Ms. Wates jumped straight into Small Bites’ Veggie Ready program and successfully completed it even though she was a few months behind when she returned from leave! With a full plate at home and in the classroom, she found Veggie Ready “truly turn-key and undeniably useful,” making it easy to integrate into her busy teaching schedule. By the end of the semester, she had graduated her class as Veggie Ready!

Ms. Wate’s school, Grantswood Community, is a Title 1 school where parents work hard but may not always have time to slow down in the kitchen with their littles. Participating in Small Bites Adventure Club’s Veggie Ready program gives Ms. Wates a way to bring hands-on food learning into the classroom, letting students try foods they never have, learn kitchen skills like how to make their own snacks, and even take a few adventurous eating lessons home to their families.

When asked what Ms. Wates’ favorite fruit or vegetable is, she offered up a ripe summer peach,  enjoyed cold and juicy, without any worry if it gets a little messy! We’re proud to spotlight Ms. Wates and celebrate the hands-on, adventurous learning she brings to her classroom at Grantswood Community School. Happy Tasting!
